So I wrote (about 3 years ago) about installing OSX 10.4 on a iBook G3 that didn't have firewire. Here are the steps on how to do it (copied from http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051211074138859)

[QUOTE]
You Need:
At least 256MB RAM in the computer you plan to install Tiger on.
A working Mac with a DVD Superdrive. It doesn't matter whether external or internal, but it must be a burner.
The mac you plan to install Tiger on must have a DVD drive.
Read on for the instructions...

Here are the general steps to follow -- note that iMac-specific 'no DVD' installation steps follow below this section.
Go to Applications->Utilities and open Disk Utility.

Insert your tiger DVD.

Select Session 1 of the Tiger DVD and press the New Image button. (Do not select the drive name itself, or it will not make an image.)

Name the image file and press OK. The image will take between five and fifteen minutes to be built. Grab a cup of coffee -- it may be longer or shorter, depending on the drive and whether it is internal or external.

Double click on the new image to mount it.

On the mounted install image, go to /System -> Installation -> Packages.

Control-click on OSInstall.mpkg and select Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu.

Go into the Contents folder, and control-click on OSInstall.dist. Select Open With -> Other from the pop-up menu, then navigate to whereText Edit is, and click Open.

Look for the following lines of code (note: line break added for a narrower display; don't add one in the code!):

function checkSupportedMachine(machineType){
var badMachines = ['iMac','PowerBook1,1','PowerBook2,1', 'AAPL,Gossamer',
'AAPL,PowerMac G3', 'AAPL,PowerBook1998', 'AAPL,PowerBook1999'];

Now, if you want to be able to install on all unsupported machines, just delete eveything in the square brackets. I changed my OSInstall.dist to (note: line break added for a narrower display; don't add one in the code!):

function checkSupportedMachine(machineType){
var badMachines = ['PowerBook1,1','PowerBook2,1', 'AAPL,Gossamer',
'AAPL,PowerBook1998', 'AAPL,PowerBook1999'];

With the code above, it enabled Tiger to be installed on an iMac and Power Mac G3 (Blue & White).

Save the changes to your desktop under the name "OSInstall.dist" -- without the .txt ending.

Drag the new OSInstall.dist into the window that has the contents of OSInstall.mpkg. It will ask you whether to replace the old one or not. Choose Replace.

Unmount the disk image.

Go into disk utility. Select your image and then press Burn.
[END QUOTE]
I would like to add that you can also use Disk Utility to "restore" the .dmg file that you would burn to the DVD to an external hard drive and boot from that drive to install OSX as well so that part about having to have a DVD drive on the machine you want to install to isn't necessarily true.

I think that I have made the decision that I will be getting the 15in MacBook Pro with the LED display and the Santa Rosa chip set. So if you all want to, feel free to donateor just click on the nifty Google ads. I mentioned it before but I am willing to be lame as well and get the thing laser engraved too if people want to advertise. I'm sure because I'm not being "original" this will get far less coverage than Leah Culver did but hey it never hurts to try right.... well maybe cus internet flamers can hurt your feelings but maybe if I get enough negative press it will be enough press in general, ooo the posibilities.

OS X 10.4 on a Clamshell iBook

Just to update anyone who reads this that doesn’t know me.

Yes you can indeed run Tiger on a 366mHz clamshell iBook with no firewire. It’s extremely easy to do too. Leave a comment if you want to know how.

Yeah it’s kinda slow on some stuff but I don’t edit high def video on it or anything. It dose really well for a seven year old machine that I picked up for $100
But for fear of getting flamed by Gizmodo readers I’d love to do a repeat of the “buy me a Mac Book" thing that Leah Culver chick did. I wouldn’t even charge half what she did and I’d still have to find some way to get the laser etching done since I don’t have a laser etcher where I work like she dose. I’d even go for just a “regular” MacBook if need be although a Pro would have more advertising real estate. Now just how to spread the word…

Yeah so the new Ocean is flippin sweet. So you should all donate to my paypal so I can get one.

Demonizing the Competition

This is something that frustrates me. Why bother telling me how bad the competition is? Shouldn't you just focus on making your product better and then tell me what it can do. Are consumers stupid by default or are they made stupid by advertising. This is just a rant and has no scientific background at all, but come on people why do "we" care more about Paris Hilton going to jail or stupid twins loosing weight than we do about why the twin towers actually fell? I know this is kinda scatter brained but yeah the boys in Redmond need to own up and start innovating instead of imitating healthy competition makes better results unhealthy backstabbing competition makes companies the are guilty of Anti Trust violations try to sue other companies for Anti Trust violations.

Update on the iBook SE project

So it's all black.... well black/grayish and running Xubuntu/Kubuntu (not sure what to call it cus I installed Xubuntu but then added KDE)
It runs sweet for a G3 366 mHz machine with only 192mb of ram. Speaking of Ram that'll be my next upgrade to 576MB (512 + the built in 64MB)

If you wanna donate that'd be sweet too cus stupid PC133 144pin ram isn't cheap now days.

On my way to be a hacker or a photographer?

Or both perhaps. Some times I feel that I have to many hobbies and not enough time/money to do them. This of course boils down in reality to me not being disciplined in time management and wasting a lot of my time saying that I am tired and not wanting to put in the time to any of the hobbies that I want to be good at.

I was reading this site today : http://www.norvig.com/21-days.html and it made some good points that you can learn to be good at something like programing, playing guitar, or photography without doing it.

On the lines of photography it's way to easy to limit myself in to thinking that there is nothing to take pictures of that would be accessible to me. This of coarse is not true I just don't have the motivation to make myself getup and go to take the pictures.

I need motivation.... and money but mostly motivation to just go do stuff, and not just sit around and do nothing.

Helio vs. Other Carriers

Here is my own private cost/service comparison for Helio vs Cingular Verizon Sprint and T-mobile. The prices should be current as far as the what the websites for those carriers say.

For sake of simplicity I will compare a common Bundle Plan

What I'm looking for:

~1000 anytime mins/Nights and Weekends

Unlimited Txt/Pic messages

Unlimited Mobile Internet.

First up Helio's All-in 1000 Plan
~1000 anytime mins/Nights and Weekends: Real simple 1000 anytime mins N/W start at 9pm($85)

Unlimited Txt/Pic messages: included

Unlimited Mobile Internet:included

Totals: 1000 mins Unlimited txt pics Unlimited Web = $85+tax each month.

Lets look at what I can get from Cingular

~1000 anytime mins/Nights and Weekends
: Well right now they only have 900 or 1350 lets go with 900 that should be fine N/W starts at 9:01pm(900 mins $59.99)

Unlimited Txt/Pic messages : The most they have is 3000 I use alot of txts so that will have to do

Unlimited Mobile Internet: Unlimited Web is included with there Media Max 3000 Bundle ($39.99)

Totals: 900 mins 3000 txt/pic msgs and unlimited web =99.98+tax each month

Hmm that's a bit pricey...

How bout T-mobile?
~1000 anytime mins/Nights and Weekends:
Alright the The Get more 1000 Plus plan N/W start at 9pm ($49.99)
Unlimited Txt/Pic messages: Unlimited Txt ($14.99)

Unlimited Mobile Internet:Unlimited Eb ($5.99)

Totals:1000 mins Unlimited Txt and Unlimited Web = $70.97+tax each month.

Not bad at all on the price. But they are on the slower Edge network for internet not a huge deal but something to be aware of.

Ok Well Helio uses Sprint's Network how bout Sprint's prices?

~1000 anytime mins/Nights and Weekends: Well the fair and flexible 900 plan looks good and N/W start at 7pm :) ($59.99)

Unlimited Txt/Pic messages : Sprint Power Vision Ultimate Pack ($25)

Unlimited Mobile Internet: included in Sprint Power Vision Ultimate Pack

Totals: 900 mins $5 for each 30min over up to 1200 Unlimited Txt and Web = $84.99+tax each month (technically $104.99 if you did use 1000 mins)

Hmmm pretty much the same for cost unless you are a heavy talker. Same network so the service area would be the same. Nights and Weekends start at 7pm.

Ok well lets check out Verizon.

~1000 anytime mins/Nights and Weekends: Again with the 900 or 1350 lets go with the 900 mins N/W($59.99)

Unlimited Txt/Pic messages: Unlimited IN network messaging plus 2500 message for non verizon customers. ($25)

Unlimited Mobile Internet: Mobile Web 2.0 ($5)

Totals: 900 mins Unlimited/2500 Txt pics Unlimited Web = $89.99

Conclusion:
T-Mobile seems to have the best pricing albeit a slower network. They do have the Sidekick too....
Sprint and Cingular all have gimicky min plans with rollovers(practically useless) and fair and flexable that can potentially cost quite a bit extra.
Verizon dose have a solid network but is rather pricey and requires large deposits unless your credit is immaculate.
Helio seems to be getting better and better slowly fixing the kinks in there network I say give them a few more months and they should be up to par as far web browsing and content with the other carriers.

All and all I see no compelling reason to switch from Helio at this point.

Cingular is pissing me off and Helio seems cooler any way

So yeah cingular decided that some how I owe them $200+ for overages but I can't access the bill online that shows these calls and I've requested the bill from them twice now. What I wanna know is how to I go from a 0 rollover min balance one month to a 2200+ roll over min balance two months later and have overage in the month inbetween... ???? something is screwy.

Ok so I don't know for sure if it was me that took this picture it could have been my dad or my wife. Anyway regaurdless of who took it that there was my son's beautiful smile for a while it has changed now like alot of things he is discovering so many new sounds and yelling them out randomly. I'm glad we have like 500+ pictures to at least record all the physical changes.... ah children

Yes my son is hillarious and VERY photogenic. He is the biggest camera ham that I know. All I have to do is pull out my cellphone to make a call and he thinks that its time to have his picture taken. That's right he is only just over a year old and already knows that the cellphone has a camera on it.
